  1. Craig Wallace reports that a group Oakland Sea-Landers meeting from time to time for lunch has grown from 4 to 13. Those at the July luncheon were (from left to right around the table) Craig, Lu Burton, Elvia Hedrick, Kay Schue, Fred Bucoy, Joan Benno, Michelle Marziano, Phil Wood, Chuck Bakken, Margret Lucky Thomas, Jim Tagneri and Jerry Cople.

  1. Pete Keller advises that the annual Florida reunion is being planned for March 14, 2020 in the Naples/Bonito/Estero area. Many Sea-Landers in the region or snowbirds have already indicated their intent to attend. You can let Pete know of your interest at peterkeller127@gmail.com

 

  1. Bill Flynn will be stepping away from the roles of president and ceo of Atlas Air and will assume the chairmanship of the company early next year. He has been with Atlas for 13 years.

 

  1. Chris Ltyle retired as executive director of the Port of Oakland on July 19th.

 

  1. Samuel Lam reports that his info about Tony Lo was wrong and that Tony does not own the container trucking company that he work for.

 

  1. John Riggs has provided a faded photo taken at the Saigon office at 25 Nguyen Hue in 1970. He, Gary Geiser, Gusty Farber and Barry Goodard are the one’s my eyes can discern.

  1. Karen Wulffraat, recalling the coverage of our San Francisco female boat crew earlier this year, decided that it is time to remember a male team. In May 1981 Sea-Land took first place in the Alcatraz to Aquatic Park Whaleboat Race; beating APL by inches.

1933    Pan-Atlantic Steamship Corporation formed in Delaware on July 25th.

 

1958    Dredging for expansion of Newark and Elizabeth port facilities commences.

 

1959    President Dwight D.  Eisenhower presents the American Legion Merchant Marine Achievement Award to Malcolm P. McLean

 

1969    Hong Kong and Taiwan service commenced.

 

1970    “Cartainers” enter the Puerto Rico Trade.

 

1972     Service to Piraeus, Greece commenced.

 

1979    SEA-LAND PATRIOT, the first D-9, is launched in Kobe.

 

 

Final Sailings

 

Marion Davis set out on his final voyage on July 18th from a hospital in Portland, Oregon at age 70 after complications during emergency heart surgery.  He was Sea-Land’s key port manager in Anchorage and entered the Matson organization when Horizon’s

Alaska service was acquired.  In 2015 he retired as vice president and general manager of Horizon Lines of Alaska, LLC but continued as a consultant to the company.
